Nurseries and playrooms get a lot of decorating love, but teens deserve to have awesome sleep spaces, too! Help make your teenager’s room the ultimate place to chill, study, and get some much needed rest by taking a cue from these 16 inspiring rooms below. Just know that after redecorating, the phrase, “Go to your room,” might suddenly become less of a threat.
1. Add some trendy touches.
This citrusy room by @hoppshouse is both cool and classy, with an elegant dark green door that’s juxtaposed by a cherry bedspread and wall art, both of which display citrus fruits. A pink locker doubles as a cute side table in this wonderful space fit for a teen.
2. Create a teenage dream.
Cloud wallpaper (or anything else they’re into these days) makes a wonderfully whimsical addition to any teen bedroom, like the one shown here by @blissfully_eclectic. It fits perfectly with the white bedding and teal paint in the rest of the room.
3. Go Multifunctional and Modern
Fiddle leaf figs aren’t just for millennials—today’s teens love the plant, too! Blogger Cindy Long designed the modern space above for her daughter, Abby, and it’s equipped with all the essentials: A bed, storage, and even fun artwork. A vanity is an excellent option for teens who may share a bathroom with a sibling but don’t want to rush their morning routines. This particular piece comes with plenty of storage, and the room, on the whole, is full of calming neutrals kicked up with a punchy pink pillow and blue patterned bedding combination.
4. Celebrate City Glamour
If your teen just can’t wait to get out of the suburbs, a city-themed bedroom like the one blogger Kelly Elko designed could offer a temporary antidote to wanderlust. Themed rooms are more common in spaces for younger children, but the idea can work just as well in teen rooms. The key is sticking to more understated touches and choosing a more sophisticated theme and color scheme such as the black, white, blue, and gray mix here.
5. Make it Boho
This clever boho bedroom by @firefinish_interiors features a pink-hued sisal rug that coordinates perfectly with the dusty pink bedspread. Boho-inspired lighting adds to the vibe. The sophisticated bed and nightstand make the room feel more grown up and trendy, as does the muted gray paint.
6. Mix It Up
Even adults would feel right at home in this glam space that blogger Oscar Bravo designed for his daughter. The moody green walls, abstract art prints, and oversized leopard print duvet complement one another perfectly and remind us of why we can’t get enough of pattern mixing. When designing a teen space, it’s a good idea to keep the larger pieces of furniture neutral, as Bravo did here with the upholstered nailhead trim bed and nightstand. That way, these items can grow with your teens into their dorms or first apartments.
7. Take a Seat
Polka dots, turquoise, flokati rugs, and lucite—oh my! This room by blogger Heather Freeman features so many of our favorites motifs and materials. An accent chair and knit pouf combo like the one above makes finishing that required reading a bit more comfy, and the nesting tables are easy to move from one spot to another if friends come over to hang.
8. Get Natural
We can’t get enough of the details in the above teen bedroom that blogger Jamie Lott designed for her son as part of the One Room Challenge. Once again, a funky plant steals the show, while wooden Mid-century modern furniture makes the room look more like a downtown loft and less like a room at your parents’ place. The decorative wall treatment might be my favorite feature. With a little bit of stock trim and paint, Lott gave the walls a charming paneled look.
9. Say Bye to Boring Carpet
You won’t believe the drastic makeover blogger Tarina Lyell completed for her clients’ teenage daughter, Ella. Adding a stylish jute rug helps to camouflage ordinary wall-to-wall carpeting, and a Moroccan pouf can serve as extra seating or a comfy footrest. If you don’t have enough room for dedicated nightstands, pushing the bed into a corner and opting to place a desk on one side of the side of the bed is a great space saving solution. Same goes for the sweet Edison bulb light that’s swagged on a set of hooks on the opposite side of the bed.
10. Rock the Rustic Look
Blogger Cristina Garay designed a rustic teen bedroom that has it all, including industrial-like sconces and eye-catching vintage accents. She notes that the white exposed “brick” backdrop above the headboard was actually created from temporary wallpaper. Between that and the built-in shelving unit beside the bed, there’s a lot of style and function packed into this footprint.
11. Stick to the Classics
How sweet is this room for two? Blogger Jessica Bruno designed a calming space to unwind using timeless pieces like a brass bamboo mirror and classic white furniture.
12. Hang Up Sentimental Pieces
Blogger Brooke Christen made over a local teen’s bedroom and really took the space to the next level! The space is both comfortable and timeless, and the decor has sentimental value, too (some of it is the teen’s own artwork!). Again, painted faux wainscoting jazzes up the walls, while a graphic rug adds interest underfoot.
13. Jazz Up a Workspace
When in doubt, add wallpaper—or at least that’s how we design folk imagine the saying goes! Designer Rittika Chokhany made this teen study space look like a place you’d want to kick back, thanks to her clever styling. All of those textiles peeking out from the corner of the picture are making us want to check out the pattern play in the rest of the room as well.
14. Combine Old and New
This space has tons of boho flair, while still incorporating classic pieces such as a campaign dresser, which has been transformed into a lounger—talk about an unexpected upcycle! Blogger Carli Alves combined a mixture of black, white, and wooden pieces to create a look that’s both grown up and cozy.
15. Hang Up String Lights
Blogger Stacy Risenmay also designed a boho space with a more minimal approach. A cozy sheepskin carpet makes getting out of bed each morning a little more pleasant, and string lights ensure that the space has a warm glow, even after hours. Again, having a small space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice bedside storage. In lieu of a bulky nightstand, Risenmay hung two shelves, and they are the perfect place to stash small bedtime essentials.
16. Glam It Up
Bring the drama! Blogger Bianca Hall designed this perfectly glamorous space: The artsy leopard wallpaper looks almost like paint, and it makes a major statement in this room. If you’re going to go big with a wall covering like this, consider keeping the bedding and other decorative accents a little more subdued.
17. Don’t Forget About the Dorm
Dorm rooms deserve some recognition, too! If your teens are headed off to college soon, they might want to make their spaces as special as this boho chic getaway that blogger Amy Littleson designed while a senior at the University of Richmond. The window frame turned jewelry organizer takes advantage of dead wall space, while the dust ruffle bedskirt helps to hide clunky dorm room bed risers.
18. Trick Out a Twin Bed
Blogger Dorothy Walton also knows a thing or two about dorm room decor. We love how she incorporated a fabric headboard into her temporary space—hers was a DIY, but you could get this look by draping a favorite textile over a store bought headboard. Monogrammed Euro shams and decorative pillows add a sophisticated touch.
