Decorating your bedroom with neutral colors can be fun and easy! By using a variety of shades and accent colors, you can balance and unify a neutral bedroom. Patterns, textures, and shapes are a great way to add visual interest to a neutral bedroom. Don’t forget to accessorize! Artwork, unique pieces of furniture, and wooden accents are a great way to add character to a neutral bedroom.
Method 1
Method 1 of 3:
Choosing Colors
1
Use a variety of shades. Use various shades of gray, white, black, or beige. However, don’t be afraid to step outside of gray, white, or beige. By tinting a bright color with white or black and combining it with another color, you can create a new hue.[1]
- For example, you can turn red into a neutral color by tinting it with white and mixing it with brown.
- Using a variety of shades will help your bedroom feel balanced, as well as unified.
- Make sure that the neutral colors you choose are cohesive and go well together.
2
Mix cool neutrals with warm neutrals. Use both cool and warm neutrals to balance your room. Warm neutrals will brighten up a cool bedroom, while cool neutrals will tone down a bright room.[2]
- For example, if your bedroom walls are painted a cool neutral color like navy blue, then brighten up the room with warm pieces of furniture like a white chaise lounge and gold bedside tables.
- Warm colors like brass and gold pair well with cool colors like gray and navy.
3
Incorporate 1 or 2 accent colors. Accent colors are a great way to prevent a room from having a washed out look. When choosing accent colors, use colors with brown or gray undertones.[3]
- For example, if your color palette is cream, gray, and beige, include an indigo throw blanket, pillows, or rug to add color to your bedroom.
- Muted colors, like pastel green or yellow, accent a neutral space nicely.
- You can add dimension with metallics like silver, gold, and bronze.
Method 2
Method 2 of 3:
Creating Visual Interest
1
Use patterns. You can include patterns by choosing patterned wallpaper, a patterned comforter, or chairs with patterned upholstery. Patterned rugs, pillows, and drapes are also a great way to incorporate patterns into your bedroom.[4][5]
2
Include a variety of textures. Fur rugs, leather headboards, and wicker or bamboo furniture are just a few ways you can add texture to your bedroom. Also, mix contrasting textures together like smooth textures with rough or matte with shiny textures.[6]
- Different textures create a visual contrast that can bring a neutral bedroom alive.
3
Play with shapes. Incorporating furniture with distinct shapes can also take your bedroom to the next level. An armchair with a striking silhouette or a chaise lounge, for example, are just a few ways you can play with shapes.[7]
4
Experiment with lighting. Lighting can easily create visual interest in your room. Use task lights, sconces, lamps, or string lights in the space. You can choose neutral lamp shades or light fixtures to keep with the theme while adding a fun design element.[8]

Method 3 of 3:
Accessorizing Your Bedroom
1
Use artwork to add depth. Artwork is a great way to add character to a neutral bedroom. Use a variety of artwork to add depth to your bedroom like sculptures, paintings, and photography. Also, try to pick artwork that matches the accented colors in your bedroom.[9]
- For example, if you are using indigo as an accent color, then choose artwork that incorporates indigo as well.
- Black and white or sepia photography work especially well in a neutral room and add sophistication and versatility.
2
Choose unique pieces to add character. Unique pieces of furniture, like found or antique bedside tables, lamps, mirrors, chairs, or a chandelier make your bedroom stand out.[10]
3
Incorporate dark wood pieces for sophistication. Dark wooden bedside tables, lamps, chairs, and stools are a great way to make your bedroom pop. Additionally, when picking wooden furniture, pick pieces with different wood tones to add variety.[11]
- If you have wooden floors in your bedroom, choose furniture in a contrasting wood color.
4
Choose metallic accessories to add flair. Metallic accessories are another great way to make your neutral bedroom pop. Choose from silver, gold, copper, or bronze bedside tables, vases, pendants, artwork, lamps, drapes, accessories and more.[12]

Expert Answer
If you’re trying to match an existing paint color so you can repaint with an almost identical hue, a color specialist will have a little device called a colorimeter. This ‘reads’ the color on your wall and provides scientific data about the color, as well as which known paint colors are closest to what was just scanned.

Expert Answer
If you’re trying to match for touch-up, that requires a huge degree of accuracy. In these cases, if you are able to take a quarter-sized piece of the sheetrock face into a paint store, most stores can scan the sample and match the color by adjusting a color as needed until it ‘disappears’ onto the sample. However, they can only manipulate the color–they can’t adjust the sheen, or the degree to which the finish is matte or shiny. So sometimes you may see the touchup color at one angle, and not at another. That denotes a difference in sheen.
