  1. Yummy. I made the french toast and the syrup according to your directions. The only thing i didn't like was that the alchohol was kind of bitter in the syrup. Next time i will skip that or make sure i boil the syrup longer so that it cooks off. Yummy recipe. Thanks!

  2. Yum!! The toast by itself is delicious. I tried the butter and syrup, but I thought it was better without (though if you like things sweeter, do make the syrup). I doubled the milk and Amaretto in the custard for our tastes. Definitely use french or sourdough bread - I tried this with both sourdough and whole grain, and they weren't even in the same ballpark. Thanks for a wonderful breakfast!

  3. OMG!! This is the "VERY" best recipe for french toast that I have ever made or had in my LIFE!!! WOW! it totally deserves the highest rating ever!! DH and I both were both on cloud nine after having this for breakfast this morning. DH said ..."it was just amazing and was the highest quality breakfast meal that he had ever had and that noone could get a better meal in the resturants as we had". This recipe will forever be the one we use for french toast from now on. Fantastic recipe! I made both butter and syrup and I highly recommend both when making this recipe. It really contributes to the french toast. Thanks so much for sharing this outstanding recipe. A+++ rating

  4. Wonderful recipe!! We really enjoyed this French Toast. The almond taste was wonderful! Brought french toast to new heights! I made the toast, butter and the syrup. I will definitely be making this recipe again! Thank you for sharing this wonderful amaretto recipe!

  5. Amazing what a little Amaretto can do for plain old French toast - oh so tender and delicious. Skipped the butter and used a little powdered sugar and plain old syrup - abolutely wonderful.

What is one common mistake when preparing French toast? ›

If the pan isn't hot enough when you put your first slice in, the custard spreads out, forming a "foot" on the bottom of the French toast. When the pan is hot enough, the batter won't have time to seep; the custard will start cooking as soon as it hits the pan. Give the pan a light coating of neutral oil and butter.

Is it better to use milk or heavy cream for French toast? ›

A creamy custard is the key to incredible French toast, so skip the watery skim milk and go for whole milk or half-and-half. Straight heavy cream turns French toast into dessert, so lean that way if you're looking for decadence.

How do I know if my French toast is done? ›

"You know when your French toast is done when the center is set and doesn't have a runny consistency once cut," Oliveira says. If you're cooking a thinner French toast or omitted eggs from your soaking liquid, a quick pan-fry will do the trick, with 3 to 6 minutes on each side.

What is the most common fault when making French toast? ›

1. Not choosing the right bread. The heart and soul of French toast really is the bread — use something sub-par and the final result is going to be sub-par. The best bread is spongy and sturdy so that it will be able to soak up the custard without completely falling apart.

Why is my toast always soggy? ›

When toast is allowed to lay flat down, condensation can build up and get trapped on the underside. This moisture then seeps back up into the bread, causing one side of your toast to become soggy.

Should I dry bread before making French toast? ›

Ideally, the bread should be slightly stale. A drier bread will soak up all the custard. Bread can be left out with the wrapper open the day before cooking. If you find yourself in a pinch, dry your bread slices in a 275°F oven for 10 minutes before soaking them in the custard.
