From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (1)

Interior design comes will all sorts of sets of challenges. Designing within the confines of a small space brings about a certain set of limitations, whereas designing larger spaces can be tricky since you can’t just place 10 chairs in a room to fill the space in a room and call it a day.

Larger living rooms come with tons of benefits and a couple of drawbacks, especially if you’re not used to having a huge space to fill. We created this collection of large living room ideas to help you figure out new ways to utilize large spaces.

This collection is filled to the brim with examples of large space designs that are incredible from floor to ceiling. If you’re looking for inspiration for furniture arrangement, colors, wall decor, and everything else that goes into making a large room beautiful, you have come to the right place!

1. The Twice as Beautiful Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (2)

We’re starting off this collection incredibly strong with this bigroom. We’re only just getting started, and I may have to stake the claim that this is my favorite living space in the entire collection. I’m a sucker for all things cozy, and I’m a double sucker for an in-house library.

The flow of this home is what makes it so special. We see little snippets of each room that all are set off from a center point, creating a very circular flow. Playing with dramatically angled ceilings with exposed wood beams brings a really unique aspect to the room as well.

The living room furniture is almost inconsequential to the design since the bones of the room are so incredible, but of course, a dining room table as stunning as that will surely enhance the space, as well as the mid-century modern accessories. I have no notes. This living room layout is perfection.

2. The Simple Skylights Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (3)

Here we have an example of another room that is saying way more with the actual construction of the room and the home rather than using furniture to amplify a plain room. This space is using nothing but shapes and light to create something dramatic.

These incredibly tall ceilings not only make the room feel wonderfully airy, but it’s a great opportunity to incorporate as many windows as you can. Why use light features when you can just eat by the moonlight? Am I right?

A built-in gas fireplace adds that bit of coziness that we want and need, and super simple but lush sofas really make this room a place where you want to stick around and relax. Why would you ever leave with a view like that?

3. The Corner Window Sitting Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (4)

This is one of the most beautiful rooms that I’ve ever seen. It just goes to show that you really don’t need much more than a set of huge windows and an incredible view on the other side of them. That being said, the interior design aspects couldn’t be more lovely in this long living room.

The wooden trim around the windows brings a wonderful depth of warmth, while the concrete floors (which are most definitely heated) and the large piece of wall art over the linear fireplace give us a modern and industrial design that always makes things feel fresh.

When it comes to the interior, using super luxurious Persian rugs brings the best kind of warmth to the space, and accompanying those are super low ottoman-style coffee tables with low plush sofas as well. Using lower-set furniture like this entices you to relax, which you wouldn’t need to ask me twice to do!

4. The Luxury Lounge Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (5)

Now you know that we needed to have at least one sunken living room in this collection. Why else would anyone ever want a giant living room other than to just make the entire thing into a sofa!? A lot of the time, sunken living rooms have a retro feel to them, but this one is rather chic and modern!

I think that this is accomplished through using concrete flooring for some modern freshness and super chic upholstery for the custom wrap-around sofa. Exposed wooden beams on the back wall bring a rustic feel, while, of course, the stand-up piano brings elegance.

5. The Window Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (6)

I’ll say it once, and I’ll say it probably another twenty more times before this is over, but honestly, there is nothing more important in large living rooms than windows, and this one is basically all windows! This room could almost be a solarium for all of the windows that are in here.

The dark hardwood used for all of the framing makes the room feel very cozy and rustic, but so do all of the very cleverly placed pieces of plush furniture. Using warm-colored velvet for the upholstery is unusual, but I’m personally a huge fan; I love the retro look.

That huge wrap-around sofa is just begging you to sit down and watch La La Land (it’s on the screen, see?), but then again, so is the fireplace, the rug, the vaulted ceilings, and the plants, and pretty much everything else in the room.

6. The Earthen Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (7)

Now this is what I call a lounge. There are so many organic materials present in this room that it feels like you’re in an entirely earthen room. Using natural tones and low seating really contribute to making this room feel incredibly serene and like a place you could spend a lot of relaxation time.

My favorite part of this room is the amazing lightly stained hardwood flooring that almost makes you feel like you’re walking on a beach. The supernaturalistic coffee table made from rounded tree trunks is so rustic and lovely, while the back wall featuring a built-in gas fireplace brings some fun modernity into the mix.

Very low-slung furniture begs you to take a seat, while wall-to-wall windows on both the east and west walls make you feel like you’re sitting outdoors, which is only accentuated by the rattan accent chairs — a truly remarkable room.

7. The Modern and Mighty Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (8)

Here we have a modern simple living room that is just the right size to fit in enough seating for all your friends. This room uses cooler tones and simple designs to make it feel chic and up-to-date. Though it feels a little bit stiff for my preferences, there are still some great things going on.

Firstly, using lightly stained wood panels to cover the ceiling brings a really necessary element of warmth. Beautiful framing around the room brings some structural interest, while classic and simple furniture allows you to play up the fun with the decor if that’s something you’re interested in.

8. The Reading Lounge Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (9)

This is an incredible room for so many reasons. High ceilings already make it impressive, but high ceilings become all the more impressive when they are utilized to use enormous windows! There is nothing I love more than natural light, and in this room, we’re even gifted with an incredible view!

The floor-to-ceiling bookshelf is a really special feature, and I can’t help but feel giddy when I see a ladder like that! Super lush curtains soften the corners of the room by the gigantic windows, while a fireplace brings that organic warmth we’re always looking for.

I adore the furnishing in this room as well, from the giant area rug with a simple pattern to the chic accent chairs and wonderful sectional sofa. This room is everything: spacious, stylish, timeless, and classic.

9. The Serenity Now! Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (10)

Though this room really has no reference to Seinfeld (I know, the name may be confusing to you for everyone who gets the reference), it does demand you to have Serenity, now! This room is modern but incredibly inviting at the same time.

Now we all love a floor-to-ceiling set of windows, but I think what really makes this room special is the carpeting. The carpeting may seem outdated to some, but this particular shade of gray is not only chic, but it’s very similar to the upholstery of the couch, which almost makes it feel like they are one congruent piece of furniture.

Of course, you can’t go wrong with a fireplace in the center of the room to bring that literal warmth, but I also completely adore the super low and antique wooden coffee table that adds a little touch of country rustic. Love!

10. The Ultimate View Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (11)

This is another room that is kind of letting the view carry it along. With windows that big on a floor that high, you can afford to let the room speak for itself instead of making statements using fancy furniture and funky decor.

This is a very simple room, using lightly stained hardwood flooring to bring some warmth and offset the rather cool colors that are being used in the furnishing. This room is organized, chic, and simple enough that anyone could successfully add their own bit of flare to it and be content.

11. The Classic Yet Cozy Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (12)

There’s something very special about this great room, and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is exactly. I think it’s the fact that everything working in cohesion is creating a room that is elegant, inviting, stylish, and functional.

This particular living room seems like the kind of place where you have productive conversations or where you go to read a book. It isn’t particularly friendly to dedicated lounging, but not every room in your home has to be there to invite you to take a nap, y’know?

Gorgeous exposed wooden ceilings are both rustic and country-chic, while the furniture in the room is very classic in shape but funky in color. Big area rugs make it feel cozy, while the floor space between the smaller pieces of furniture makes it feel bright and airy. A lovely room indeed!

12. The Alcove Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (13)

Elegance and simplicity are the names of the game when it comes to designing this beautiful living room. Larger in height than it is wide, this room feels so expansive and open that you almost feel like you’re sitting outside, especially thanks to those gorgeous archways.

Dark hardwood flooring is impeccably elegant and rich looking, and we see this color brought up through the rest of the decor. Organic-looking area rugs bring a lovely contrast, and using light-colored furniture makes the room feel bright.

The structure of this house is truly something to behold, with the super high ceilings and clay walls. It’s rather unusual to find curved archways, but I find it brings something really special to a room.

13. The Low Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (14)

There isn’t a single thing that I don’t absolutely adore about this large living room idea. The room feels absolutely expansive due to the fact that one of the walls is entirely windows, and the opposite wall is a landscape mirror. The reflection of the outdoor space really makes you feel like you’re sitting in the warm breeze.

I personally love carpet, and in this instance, using a light-colored carpet against gorgeous leather sofas really works for me. Everything is low-slung in this room to really let you know that this space is purely for relaxation.

This room has a bit of a mid-century modern feeling to it, especially with the exposed wood on the ceiling and accent chairs, along with the many unique coffee tables. I absolutely adore this room and would move in in a heartbeat!

14. The Perfect Living Lounge

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (15)

I love it when designers aren’t afraid to use a little bit of color! In almost all of the designs we’ve seen so far, there’s been a real focus on using wood elements and organic shades for the design, so it’s always fun to see a pop of blue every once in a while!

This is a neat and tidy small living room within a larger space centered around a centerpiece complete with a flat-screen tv and fireplace. I always love an L-shaped sofa, which works so well in this room with such gorgeous upholstery, too.

Using an entire wall as shelving is always a smart idea as it’s a great space saver, and you can end up using all of your fun trinkets and books as decoration! It serves as a gallery wall and always makes the room feel very personal and inviting, too.

15. The Cozy Cove Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (16)

This room has a whole lot to boast about. Though it may not be the largest living room of all time, it certainly is tall, and it certainly is beautiful. It’s so comfy and cozy but elegant and rustic at the same time – my perfect combination of things!

The stone wall in this room is that piece of uniqueness that makes this room feel very special. It looks particularly fantastic against the dark hardwood flooring, and I adore the hide rug adorning the center of the room.

Beautiful double windows let that natural light in that we know and love, while that gorgeous sectional sofa with perfect upholstery in charcoal is very classy, but its texture is so inviting. And when was the last time that you saw a butterfly chair? Amazing!

16. The Vaulted Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (17)

Another beautiful example of a room that is letting the bones of the home do most of the leg work. This is a giant space with lots of visual interest, including the gorgeous exposed wooden vaulted ceiling, an even more stunning stone fireplace, and wall-to-wall windows to let that natural light in.

We have very simple and elegant furniture placement here, some white pieces to pop against the hardwood flooring, though the same shade of wood is brought up through the rest of the room as well. Decorative shelving brings the opportunity to bring some of your personality into a room.

17. The In-Between Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (18)

It’s interesting comparing the last living room idea to this one, as there are many similar aspects present, but they’re done in very different ways. We have a fireplace with shelving on either side and one wall made entirely of windows.

I particularly love how the outdoor seating area is situated directly next to this one, kind of connecting you to the backyard. The furniture in this space is a little bit more extravagant, but there ain’t nothing wrong with a little bit of funk!

18. The Pop Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (19)

This room is so fresh and fun! This one is rather different from the other ones in that it seems to want you to cool off rather than warm up, if that makes any sense. This is a living room you’d find in a place that is warm all year round, and going inside means seeking refuge from the heat outside.

It’s also different in the way that the design is really playing around with pops of color, which I love! Here we’re using a gorgeous lemon yellow and some royal purple, which are wonderful contrasting colors.

Everything else in this room is white white white – from the flooring to the sofas, to the accent chairs, to the walls and fireplace. This room is so bright, especially thanks to those landscape windows and amazing skylight!

19. The Date Night Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (20)

And yet another room where the view is doing all of the leg work – but of course, the room itself is simply gorgeous in and of itself. We have nothing but windows on all sides of this space, allowing you to feel as though the evening sky is close enough for you to touch.

We have huge pieces of furniture here, with a giant modular sectional sofa and corresponding accent chairs. All very simple and elegant, as, of course, you wouldn’t want to be distracted from that view.

20. The Eccentricities Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (21)

There is so much going on in this room that it’s hard to know what to look at first. This is the kind of room that I’d have to spend a good few minutes looking around before I could sit and relax – there’s just so much interesting stuff going on!

Starting with the incredible area rugs with funky patterns that pop so well against the white tile flooring. I particularly love how the designer here used darker pieces of furniture and decor to add contrast to the completely white room.

It’s rare that people go this funky with decor, so it’s super fun to see! From the giant giraffes in the front foyer to the strange glass coffee tables and even stranger light fixture, this room is for more than just lounging; it’s for looking!

21. The View Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (22)

I used to live in a place just like this, and I have a very fond memory of sleeping in a living room just like this before any of my furniture had arrived. Waking up in a sleeping bag on the floor next to that incredible view was a very special moment; imagine being able to do that all the time!

This room is incredibly chic with its furniture choices. Here we see very modern-shaped modular sofas with sharp angles and very minimal accents with the coffee table and ottoman. Though it still entices you to lounge, the furniture pieces are more there for function so that the view can be the focal point of the space.

22. The Heavenly Cathedral Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (23)

I’m noticing a little bit of a trend here: I tend to pick living room ideas with rooms featuring nothing but huge windows and not much else going on in the room itself. I don’t need much more than some daylight and a view of the outdoors, but furniture this cozy-looking definitely contributes in a positive way!

These incredible walls, ceiling, and windows make you feel like you are in a church almost, especially with the curved angle. Dark hardwood flooring feels incredibly rich, while darker, plush furniture feels very inviting. I really love this room.

23. The Outside-In Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (24)

Oh my god, there is just so much good stuff going on in this room that I can hardly take it. You may have already guessed that I love windows, and that I love a sunken lounge area, but I haven’t mentioned how much I love the ocean. So you can guess that this room makes me squeal a little bit in my heart.

The way this room is situated almost makes it feel like it’s an infinity pool type of situation, where the living room is just on the other side of the water. The sunken modular sofa is just divine, though I think that someone may eventually want a backrest.

White tile is used in all other areas of the home, which is a classic and wise choice when designing homes in the tropics. It’s sleek looking, easy to clean, and a great way to make a room feel cool.

24. The Hunting Lodge Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (25)

This living room idea couldn’t be any more different than the one we just looked at, but I love how it shows just how different a room can be, but as equally fabulous! This is a hunter’s dream and quite the step up from a hunter’s cabin if you ask me!

Vaulted ceilings and huge windows make the room feel extravagant, especially with the incredible hardwood flooring and stone fireplace. We have so many organic elements in this room, and usually, I’m referring to weaving or clay when I say that, but in this case, I’m talking more about literal animal skins!

This room is incredibly spacious, especially since it’s an open-concept room that is connected to the dining area and the kitchen. A stunning design through and through.

25. The Tropical Luxury Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (26)

Back in the tropical zone with this absolutely incredible living area design. The ocean is just a few steps away from you, but this space is enticing all in its own way. From the stone flooring to the amazing cement fireplace on the large wall, this is a room you could be happy in for the rest of your life!

White leather sectional sofas are timeless and chic, with nice plush pillows to soften them up even further. The exposed wooden ceilings is one of the most stunning renditions that I’ve ever seen, I just can’t get over how close this space is to the water.

26. The Relaxation Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (27)

Another incredible room that is remarkably similar to the last one but just a little bit more cozy. I absolutely adore the fact that we have a live garden area set right in the in-between space, bringing some bright freshness to the indoor portion of the living room.

The shaggy rug almost feels like it’s meant to resemble sand, while the white leather pieces of furniture are very chic and modern. Using wooden panels for the walls brings a glorious aspect of warmth to the space, while those amazing light fixtures add a little spark of funk.

27. The Beige & Black Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (28)

This is another one of my favorite rooms in the collection. Here I’m seeing inspiration both from mid-century modern and Japanese aesthetics, and they’re working so well together.

I love that both the flooring and the walls are using the same type of hardwood to bring both natural and warm elements to the space. A huge L-sectional sofa is wonderfully plush and inviting while using huge house plants adds some freshness to the room.

The designer here was smart in using black accents to bring some formality to the space, which we see in the window framing, light fixtures, candlesticks, and fireplace. This is a perfect room, in my opinion.

28. The Log Cabin Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (29)

Now this room takes the log cabin to a whole other level. I am always so enthralled when I see homes with logs as the foundation, as it reminds me of visiting my great-grandparents. This is a timeless look, especially with the incredible windows and stone fireplace.

You don’t need to do much with the decor and furniture in a room that’s as incredible as this one, and the designer here kept it simple with plush couches, kitschy coffee tables, and classic light fixtures.

29. The Eye-in-the-Sky Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (30)

Here we have a gorgeous, simple, and contemporary living room idea that is, again, letting the windows and the view do a lot of the leg work here. This room is simply heavenly in its design: open, airy, inviting, and timeless.

This huge white leather sectional sofa is the perfect choice for this room, especially in keeping the backrest nice and low. We have a glass coffee table to make sure the center of the room doesn’t feel clogged and neat little pieces of artwork in all the nooks and crannies — a beautiful room in all aspects.

30. The Fireplace Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (31)

Now you may be wondering why I picked this living room, seeing as the furniture arrangement of sofa and armchair is obviously very outdated, but I couldn’t get over how incredible the room itself was. Super high vaulted ceilings with what looks like a hexagonal sunroom to the right, while we have panel windows all along the leftmost room.

What brings them together is an absolutely incredible brick fireplace that opens up to either room. I can totally get behind this carpet too, as carpet always makes me just wanna lay down and roll around on it. Again, the furniture can be forgiven, but only because it’s so easy for me to imagine my own furniture in this absolutely incredible space!

31. The Perfect Perfect Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (32)

This room isn’t particularly large, but that may just be because it has such huge pieces of furniture in it. This is a giant sectional modular sofa with cushions so plush that I could probably just forego having a bedroom and live in this room full time.

I adore the main feature wall in this room as it hosts so many different things: a built-in fireplace, a television, lighting, and tons of shelving space for all of your most beautiful knickknacks and favorite books.

The color scheme is this space is so incredibly calming, made all the better by the lovely fresh splashes of live plants around the room. There isn’t a single thing I don’t love about this living room, other than the fact that I don’t live in it!

32. The Angles Living Room

From Classic to Contemporary: 32 Large Living Room Ideas that Make the Most of the Space (33)

We’re finishing off this wonderful collection very strong with this room. It has a little bit of everything that we love: color, warmth, plush furniture, huge windows, elements of wood, and tons of different textures to bring it all together.

I adore how the staircase is being used as a feature wall to host the fireplace and television almost as much as I love how the same wood is used in the hardwood flooring as well. Sheer and luxurious curtains cover ample-sized windows.

The furniture chosen here is wonderfully simple, with a gorgeous sectional sofa that reminds me of the Michelin Man and a beautiful teal accent chair to brighten things up. This room is so cozy yet so fresh!
