Spring Decorating: The Best French Country Decor Ideas for Spring (1)

I love french decor all year long, but there’s no season more tailor made for french-country style than spring.

It’s not that there’s no winter in France or that the trees don’t change their colors in autumn. But can you really think of anything more emblematic of Provence than rolling fields of lavender?

Ok, true, lavender actually blooms in June, which is technically early summer. But the garden and all its delights comes to life long before that, charming us from early spring throughout the summer.

It is this reawakening of nature that’s at the heart of both spring decorating and the best of French Country home style. Spring is a time where one might imagine visiting a rustic country home amid a landscape dotted with French farmhouses, providing inspiration for the design style so beloved amongst fans of the french countryside.

French Country Decor Ideas for Spring

This vision of the rustic charm you would find in french country interiors is the most essential ingredient of my curated picks for spring decor in this post. The very same elements that make french furnishings appealing are what make these seasonal selections my favorites.

I’ve broken this post up by the characteristics that define the design style which can then be applied to the decor accents. So, for instance, the components that exemplify a french country kitchen are the same ones that differentiate french home accessories.

Likewise, these over-arching categories apply to the seasonal aspect of the items, as well. Above all, you will find relaxed elegance and comfort as the key traits of all the pieces. Let’s take a look at those fundamental attributes.

Texture

Influenced by rugged beams, timeworn antiques, aged tapestries and chippy sconces, texture is an all important element that is ever present in french country design.

In spring, especially, one thinks of nubby linen fabrics, coarse burlap cushions on the sofa, and the ubiquitous French market basket with its wares, perhaps tossed casually on the dining table. Rattan, wicker and other woven textures also fit in and look exceptionally updated in recent years. They are used in everything from trays and bowls to vases and frames, and anything else you can think of.

Patina

Along with texture, the other most defining characteristic of french country style is a warm patina. Inspired by pieces like an aged chandelier, antique altar candles, chippy shutters or matured copper, everything is varnished and crumbly in the most delightful way. Even soft goods have the same layered complexity, like peeling wallpaper, weathered upholstery, battle-scarred throw pillows and seasoned rugs.

In spring when these pieces all come outside, hues are lightened, color palettes are softened and there’s an abundance of neutral shades in creams and beiges.

Nature

In terms of motifs, much of this is pulled from nature with florals leading the way, preferably on natural materials like cotton and linen, mixed with simpler patterns such as ginghams and stripes. I love vintage country floral linens and always present are the ever-popular toile fabrics, perhaps the single most used, or at least well-known, french textile.

Birds are common, too, in wooden figurines and on iron lanterns and cages, or printed on everything from pillows and curtains to artwork for the walls.

In spring there’s also eggs, nests, moss and twigs, along with an abundance of branches that I’ll mention below.

Garden

Similar to motifs from nature, but a category all its own, french spring style borrows heavily from the garden. First and foremost, are the cast iron urns in all shapes and sizes, the more rusted and vintage the better. There are low 2 handled styles, and taller leaner models, some painted and others in stone.

Every variety of planter can work here, including terracotta pots, antique olive jugs, and even garden statues. Watering cans, seed packets, chippy folding garden chairs and little benches, too.

Very French. Very spring.

Plants and Branches

Above I mentioned floral motifs, mostly used in textiles, but we can’t leave out the actual florals, too. Whether fresh flowers or really good faux, flowers and branches are an essential component of french decor for spring.

Branches, in particular, deserve a special mention, as I’m reminded of cherry blossoms in the center of Paris in April. Don’t forget dogwood, forsythia, puss* willows and more.

It doesn’t take much to add a touch of spring to your home to freshen up your spaces and work with your existing decor. A wreath hung playfully, some pillows tossed about, a few updated vignettes with florals in planters and an odd bit here and there.

Soft pastel tones look terrific accenting a neutral home and add just the right amount of pretty color to highlight the season.
